Lynch performed complete replacement of the Pine Street Bridge No. 548 using the Accelerated Bridge Construction method for both the substructure and superstructure, as well as incidental excavation, utility, and bituminous concrete paving work.

Our nation’s aging infrastructure has created a demand for replacing critical components such as highways, bridges and pipelines with minimal disruption to the general public. The replacement of the Pine Street Bridge No. 548 for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation required the used of Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), including prefabricated bridge units (PBU’s) for the superstructure and modular precast units for the entire substructure. One of the challenges of this project was the contract special provision to limit the bridge closure to 120 consecutive calendar days. The owner provided an incentive clause of $10,000.00 for each calendar day that the bridge is reopened to traffic prior to the 120 days, and a disincentive of $10,000.00 for each calendar day that the bridge remained closed after the 120 days. Lynch was able to realize the maximum incentive of $300,000.00 by limiting the bridge closure to just 90 days, finishing the project 30 days ahead of schedule.
